Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate. – J.R.R. Tolkein
There are times when the road looks darker than it has before. A time when we feel hopelessness creep in and grip our heart a with a cold malice that puts ice in our veins. It happens right before a bend in the road, right before something may change. We hear a dark sinister laughter and we spin wildly down. This is the playing ground of the enemy but also the proving grounds of our faith. We have a choice to either give into the darkness or pray and press in and shine brighter.
The bible says (Acts 20:23) that the Holy Spirit always told Paul what would happen when he would walk into a town and he would experience imprisonment or afflictions. How daunting that must have seemed sometimes as we would be walking up to the city gate knowing that this was the place he would be stoned again, or imprisoned again. I wondering if he ever heard the enemy laughing and telling him to just give up already. But Paul knew that just around the corner the glory of God was waiting for him and that he would see Christ glorified in what he did. In Acts 20:24 he puts in beautifully. “But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”
The ending could have been tragic. The apostles could have giving up and given in. Instead, they picked up and trudged on and trusted the promises of Jesus. They continued to fight the good fight and to run their races. They spread the gospel as far as they could go. They knew that Christ had something for them just around the corner! That if they could just get over the hill they would see all His splendor and majesty. That no matter what the road looked like behind them that in front of them was always a new road. They knew that the promises of God laid ahead of them and they held on to that tighter than anything else.
My question to you today is this. Are you ready to follow after Christ? Are you ready to put your faith in His promises? Are you ready to forsake the world and everything in it? If so then may God bless you and keep you all of your days and know that you are in good company.
